Apple launched its tablet computer iPad in India on Friday, exactly a year after it announced the gadget in the US and nine months after it appeared in shop windows abroad. Termed the fastest selling gadget ever, it has sold nearly 15 million units across the globe. The Telegraph answers your questions.

Why is the iPad coming to India so late?

Industry watchers feel Apple is only dumping its “old” iPad inventory on India to make way for the next generation of iPads abroad. Even Hong Kong and Singapore got the current version of iPad as far back as July 2010. The iPad 2 is expected to debut in a couple of months, though Apple, true to its track record, has not made an announcement.

“India has never been a priority market for Apple. Even in the case of the iPhone, we were one of the last markets to get the product,” says Anuraj Gambhir, innovation analyst and former Ericsson innovation head.

So if I rush, will I be among the first to own an iPad in India?

Sorry, no. Many Indians already own an iPad. Unofficially, the iPad has been available in the grey market for months. Many also bought the gadget online or abroad. According to analysts, India already has about 40,000 iPads.

“I didn’t even know that the iPad was being launched in India until my nephew told me in the evening,” a gadget-freak chartered accountant who walked into the deserted Apple premium reseller store in City Centre Salt Lake said on Friday evening. He was looking for a cover for his iPad, which he had bought from Singapore last year.

When the iPad was launched in the US in April 2010, people had queued up all night to buy it.

Should I wait for the next version of the iPad?

According to the Internet buzz, iPad 2 will have two cameras (useful for video calls, the current version does not have a camera), a better display and a faster processor. With increased competition from Samsung, Motorola, RIM and other companies, the iPad 2 could also be easier on the pocket.

Can I walk into a store and buy an iPad now?

In Calcutta, the iPad will be available at big electronics stores, including the Apple premium resellers at City Centre Salt Lake and City Centre Rajarhat called Imagine. Pantaloon’s chain of Ezone stores will sell the iPad from Saturday, said a spokesperson.

On Friday evening, only the top-end iPad models were available at the Imagine stores. The other models had been sold to those who had pre-booked them. The next lot of entry and mid-level models will arrive next week. The deposit for pre-booking is Rs 5,000.

What models of the iPad have been launched and at what prices?

Six models are being sold with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB memory in Wi-fi or Wi-fi plus 3G versions. The 16GB iPad with Wi-fi will cost Rs 27,900, the 32GB Rs 32,900 and the 64GB Rs 37,900. The iPad with 3G will cost Rs 34,900 for 16GB, Rs 39,900 for 32GB and Rs 44,900 for 64GB. The prices are inclusive of taxes.

What can the iPad do?

The iPad is a touchscreen computer, not as powerful as a desktop or a laptop but great for communication and entertainment. Globally, the iPads are mostly used for surfing the Internet, sending emails and instant messages (using on-screen keyboard), browsing photographs, listening to music, watching films and streaming videos, reading ebooks, newspapers and magazines and for GPS navigation.

Can the iPad replace my laptop?

The iPad is more a companion device that takes mobile social computing to the next level, says technology analyst Rajat Agarwal.

Can I make calls on the iPad?

No, you cannot make calls on the iPad.

How large is the iPad?

The iPad is slightly smaller than an A4 sheet of paper. It’s 9.56 inches tall, 7.47 inches wide and 0.5 inches deep. The multi-touch LED is 9.7 inches diagonally. The Wi-fi model weights 680 grams and the 3G plus Wi-fi one 730 grams.

How will I charge the iPad?

By using a power adapter or hooking it to an USB port of your desktop or laptop. The power adapter is part of the standard package.

How can I surf the Internet on the iPad?

For Wi-fi Internet access, you need to be in a hotspot. Unlike abroad, there are very few public hotspots in India. At home, you can use a router to create a Wi-fi hotspot. For 3G Internet access, you need a micro-SIM card, which is smaller than a cellphone SIM card, from a service provider.

Can I use Tata Photon Plus or Reliance Netconnect Broadband or other such devices to surf the web on the iPad?

There is no USB slot in the iPad. Hence, such devices cannot be plugged in and used to access the Internet.

Can Indian users download iPad applications from the web store?
